The electromagnetic grid has been wiped out completely  due some unknown threat and almost instantly people have lost what makes them human.  In one day, Cordell managed to narrowly escape a bullet, grieve the loss of his family, and fall in love with a guy that stole his gum. Maybe day two will treat him better.
