Vera's life has been anything but normal from a very young age onwards. She grew up in the small town of Avilon in an orphanage for the children of soldiers. Her father left her with no one and Vera has been living amongst children in similar situations all her life. But when Avilon is bombed, chaos erupts, and Vera along with the only other survivors of the orphanage do anything they can to save themselves. With the help of Henry, a man who was once in love with Vera's mother, Vera manages to flee Avilon and arrives in an icy wonderland, just before Christmas. There she meets other refugees from all over the continent and as she grows up friendships, enemies, love, mysteries, and thrills are all thrown together in a huge turmoil that Vera calls life.
