Kate is twelve years old and her parents disappeared when she was only 2 years old. She lives with her Uncle Todd and his wife Aunt Lucinda. Her uncle is a mysterious scientist who has a small room in the attic for his laboratory. One day when Kate comes home from school a light coming from the attic strikes her and so she takes a risk and goes into the forbidden room of Uncle Todd's laboratory. "Crash! Everything was dark. It was as though I was being hypnotised, spirals everywhere. My heart beating quickly. I didn't know what to do until suddenly I fell and then it was all just a blur."
