She felt the heat from his hands inches from her waist as his fresh breath caressed her cheek. Roman's silky eyes held onto hers and her breathing halted in her chest. His lips, inches away from her lips, lifted in a deep snarl that sent shivers down her spine.

"I can't." 

She wanted desperately to reach up and bury her fingers in his soft curls, but they were having such great progress that she didn't want to ruin. 

"Why?" Her voice was barely a whisper.

"It's too dangerous, Kate."

"NO," his firm voice silenced her. "One touch. And I can ruin you. Just one touch. And I can kill you."

Kate's only choice after being cast aside by her family was to pack what she could and run. She couldn't chance someone finding out that it was all her fault. 

Pushing the memories to the farthest corner of her mind, she sets off on a path to try and figure out what she actually is. 

Because she knows she's not human.
