Jacob Black and Mara Jones have been best friends since she moved to La Push when she was five.
The two were usually accompanied by Embry Call and Quil Ateara. However, Embry starts ignoring them, and joins Sam Uley's 'gang'.
Soon after, Jacob joins, leaving Mara and Quil alone and feeling abandoned. Unknowingly to Jacob, Mara has had a small crush on him for many years, and his departure from her life left her utterly broken.
