A collection of short stories - my entries for @Ooorah 's Ultimate Science Fiction Smack Down! SFSD 2021

This is a series of Short Stories I wrote on my daily train commute to and from work. A starship captain confronts a duplicitous prisoner on her ship. A traveller lost in the woods meets unexpected help. On trial for her scientific knowledge a prisoner laments the world she lives in. A displaced people make their final stand in an old fortress against an encroaching colonial army.

Exploring a possible future where Space has become weaponised. NB this story is not actually complete, but it is certainly as far as I am taking it. I believe it still makes enough sense to follow anyway.

A trilogy of military hard SciFi short stories, each of which stands on its own but is linked to the earlier parts. Part 1 is my attempt at writing what a battle in space might really be like. Part 2 is - well, as a student of military history, I was struck by how some things in the military life have seemed to be constant over the centuries. Part 3 is the result of trying to imagine what an infantry fire-fight might be like in the 22nd century or beyond. How does technology play into it?

A planet left alone besieged by the Xenos. The planet survives in the background as a more serious situation unfold. The planet witnesses a Galactic widespread war erupt.

What happens when a young man finds himself in a place a little out of his solar system, but closer to danger then he could ever imagine? Small number of parts, long chapters!

Death and decay have rusted away at a world once prosperous; and now only the scattershot remnants of civilization speckle the tortured land, striving to maintain their own tortured existence-helpless. Hapless. Hopeless. As a whole planet-indeed, whole star systems-silently ready themselves for the ultimate plunge into the midnight gulfs that once propped them against the cosmic background, a tiny undercurrent threatened to upheave the prophetic vision that is entropy-slipping past those immutable laws that keep those sidereal streams in them heavens a-flowing. An insignificant spark of life, unassuming, forsaken amid the refuse of mankind-destined to change all of their destinies. This is its ballad.
