Winston Highsmith is just your average, run-of-the-mill librarian. He works from nine to six with a thirty minute lunch break at twelve, which he usually spends reading rather than eating. Recently, a series of horrendous murders by a criminal known to the public as the Fayetteville Murderer has caught his attention, though, and Winston takes an interest in the case along with his best friend, Jacob Martindale.

Jacob Martindale is a criminal investigator for the Franklin County Police Department. The case has left him with his head spinning as the killer's flashy modus operandi and generally elusive nature lead him to be quite the conundrum. But Jacob's break may have finally come in the form of his first witness: the most recent victim's daughter, Lorelei Bates.

Lorelei Bates has just witnessed a murder. Her father's murder, specifically. The very sight of her father's killer has left her mind scarred, and every night she has nightmares of the man she's demonized within her mind. She's since made nearly every attempt possible to set her mind somewhere else, somewhere far away from the reality that has come crashing into her life. But she knows that this is little more than running away. She knows that her actions are only being ruled by her fears. She knows that her world is slowly crumbling down around her.

With every month that follows, the body count threatens to rise, and these three people will be caught in a web of intrigue that will test to see who breaks first.
