The world is left in ruins after a nuclear war. The bombs and excess radiation making over 2\3  of the earths surface inhabitable. A plague followed the earths destruction, and due to limited resources took 72 years for the plague to die out. There are still a few cases here and there in the villages on the border of the countries, the people who are infected have no chance of survival.
  
   Hazel  Wood a 17 year old girl who was orphaned at age  6, which she had the plague to thank for,  lost not only her parents, but her older and only brother Elijah Wood as well. She was adopted at the age of 8, and has never uttered a single word since watching her family die.
  
  What happens when Grant Price enters her life as they try to survive in the barren wasteland that earth has become and the now call home after their banishment from the continent- the 'new earth'.
