Dr. Abigail Barton was many things. She was the head surgeon at a hospital in New York, the youngest surgeon at that. She was an orphan, but she had come to terms with that. She never knew her family and has no interest in them. They left her, and that was that. She thought she would never meet any of her family until her brother, whom she had never met, was her patient.
