Many thought the plague was brought on by God, as punishment for wrongdoing and sin. Anna was never very religious and believed otherwise. Her father, a merchant and her mother, a good housewife, never did anything to deserve such punishment. Yet she, who did not believe in God, was spared. She could not comprehend how it could be divine punishment. But so many did. Would it ever end?

The After Effects
After it all happened, the Plague created what feels like a whole new world. Survivors created new lives for themselves and carried on with their lives. Me? I didn't get the chance to create a new life. Thanks to my absolutely wonderful father figure, I was forced to become an entirely different person. The wings had moved until they curved around them both and shut out a lot of the light. Its face was so near hers that she could feel its breath brushing against her skin. "Please just look at me for a second. Just look. I'm not going to hurt you." One of the hands grabbed her chin and forced her head to turn, and then she was looking straight into a pair of dark brown eyes. It had a human face too. She had been expecting something monstrous or ghastly, and the surprise made her falter for a moment. He looked young, with a bad haircut and an earnest expression on his face.
