"There's an ancient legend that revolves around a thousand cranes. The legend says, if you make a thousand cranes you'll be granted a wish. One wish - a wish you can use for anything."

"That's hopeful thinking," Stephen dismisses, with an exasperated roll of his eyes. "Hopeful thinking is hopeless."

"If you say so. It's just a legend, you don't have to believe it."

"Do you?"

Alice shrugs. "I don't know. You'd have to be really desperate to make a thousand cranes for a wish."

Years later, Stephen becomes desperate enough to resort to hopeful thinking.
