"Anything broken can be repaired. But it can never be put back the same way again."
Valentine thought she had her life planned out; she had supportive friends, a family that encouraged her to make choices that would benefit her future, a good education coupled with good grades, and a job that she loved that gave her good money. But when she tries to take the next step that would make her life perfect, finding the man to spend the rest of her life with, she finds herself stumbling and falling down a road of despair. It leads to her outlook on life to dull to an eternal gray, a gray that grows thicker and thicker until all she wants to see is black. This results in her attempting to take her life, and when that fails, she is determined to try it again.
Everything goes to pieces. Her friends, left in the dark, take her unresponsiveness for disinterest and distance themselves away from her. Her family, not understanding how things could have become the way it did, become stressed more and more as their options run low. Because of her time spent in the hospital and therapy, as well as her state of mind, she ends up losing her job. The piles of bills take chunks out of the savings, and are becoming too much to keep up with.
Left with no other choice, Valentine's parents take her to their most trusted family friend; Sebastian. They hope that by doing so, they can prevent their reputation from being ruined, and that Sebastian will be able to help Valentine recover from the damage that has been done. The time spent with him helps Valentine to realize that maybe hearts made of glass can be fixed after all.
