Meet Avery, who though she was just a normal high school girl in the suburbs of Chicago, who just might be falling for her best friend, Jackson.

However, one day her life is turned upside down as an army of masked shooters come into her school and chaos erupts. Soon after, she finds herself alone, wandering the streets of the city she thought she knew.

A group that call themselves, "The Risen," find Avery and tell her that is 100% divergent, which confuses her more. As she realizes how important she is, and how many people are hunting for her, she is forced to leave behind everything she knows and fight for her life.

She embarks on a journey that will leave her scared, not just of others, but of what she has become. She has to find out who she can trust, and who could ruin her, who she can love and who will leave her devastated, and who will help her and who will manipulate her.
