Akane Kayaba was the younger sister of, Akihiko Kayaba. He never took notice of her when she always tried and even dropped down low to begging him for attention. At the age of fourteen, Akihiko asked Akane to do a risky favor for her dear older brother. He asks her to find a worthy opponent in SAO for her.

With Kirito beating Heathcliff, a.k.a Kayaba Akihiko (who was also Ume's uncle), everyone was released from the game. But alas, that isn't where the story ends. Kirito and Asuna meet together in real life, happy as can be, only to find out three hundred players have yet to awaken from their slumber. She is drawn to him, though she does not understand why. But she wants to know why he is alone, why he fights solo.
