TENNESS BARACK is twelve years old, and coming fast to a certain number of age. A thirteenth birthday is a very important event for the Baracks--it's the day when they inherit their savvy, a special ability that enables them to do things that others can't. It can end up fanatical and amazing, and can likewise become shocking and destructive; and every family member knows it. For Tenness, his time bomb is just around the corner, a mere week away.
However, before Tenness can brace himself for what is it come, his brother learns a secret that had been kept away from him--and the rest of the family. So tension is high when their car breaks down on a family drive. Saved by the last family expected--and the last family Tenness's mother wanted to meet again--the Baracks spend the night so they can get repairs in the morning. As Tenness tries to help clear the air, he's hit hard with his new savvy--and now nobody can understand a word he's saying. Great. How will he be able to help his mother forgive herself for her past, without being able to communicate to anybody?
