This is true until the pair unexpectedly (and dramatically) break up during their winter formal. Just when Meredith begins to feel she can't handle the weird fighting over her attention and approval from the two, she meets Patrick. So Sam and Claire become third wheels. And they don't like it one bit.

It also means Cole has to leave Meredith. He doesn't want to, but this is his new job, and she needs to finish school. He comes home once every couple months, when he has the time. Meredith needs to decide whether she finishes school, or she quits school for a while and moves to Minnesota with Cole. That's a very hard decision for her. But she knows what she wants to do.
