"Where are you going?" she asked.
He glanced around nervously, shifting from one foot to the other.
"Nowhere important."
"Is anyone with you?"
"No." He was watching her carefully, preparing to bolt in case of danger.
"Well, what's your plan then? You have to have something in mind."
His gaze fell to the ground. "No plan, just passing through."
Silence fell between them, and he hoped that she would buy it. If everything went smoothly, he'd be back on the trail before sunset.
"I don't believe you," she finally said. Her eyes narrowed, daring him to press his case further.
"Okay." He would just have to find another way out. Surely it wouldn't take him too long, especially with his deadline so close. He couldn't risk staying put for another night.
"Okay? That's it?" She seemed genuinely shocked. "You're not going to try to convince me that you're not a liar? You're just going to let me call you out on it?"
He nodded.
The girl looked at him thoughtfully, before seemingly coming to a decision. "You can go."
Looking up, the very corner of his lips turned up in the slightest smile.
"But I'm coming with you."
And there was the catch.
