The future USA is a dark place, for those living in the ducts anyways. America is divided in two: "The Skyline", which is a brilliant, Utopian city above ground, inhabited only by the wealthy and famous and surrounded by large thick walls. Then there is "The Ducts", as referred to by the Skyliners. It's real name is The S.C.M, which is an acronym for: Subterranean, Controlled, Metropolis. It is a massive cone shaped structure that lurks below The Skyline. It stretches 100 feet underground and is inhabited by the lower class citizens, known as "The dwellers" which have no access to the Skyline or the earth's surface. It is strictly patrolled by the government's "Watchers" which are law enforcement soldiers that have clearance to shoot misbehaving dwellers on sight. Living conditions in the Ducts are very poor and it's inhabitants are miserable, maximum wage is five dollars an hour and resources for survival are limited... I have sat often in front of the computer, and stared long at the screen without ever writing a word. The synopsis for this project has haunted me since the first person asked me "So, what is it about?", and to this day I have never been able to deliver a straight answer. This book is about a number of things, many of which do not fit evenly into a succinct description. I have tried to make them fit and have found the resulting descriptions ill-representing and dull. Thus, I have decided to go without a description. This book will fade into obscurity no matter what I put here, so I might as well write what's really important. Winter in a city is an especially punishing time. This book comes out of my late nights and early mornings riding the train, and my looking at the window and being able to make out nothing but the blur of the glass. From the outside it may look dead, but certain people know that the inner workings of a city are a true marvel to behold. In writing this, I have tried to capture that marvel and deliver it to you, the reader. This is a book about a city and the people within it. The rest is up for you to read, if you so choose. In the future, science has found a way to re-animate the dead and make them pliant servants for the wealthy. They buy the units for 10,000 for a base model. More attractive units sell higher as well as the more physically fit the model is the higher the price. The units are used for anything and everything their owner wants, from household work to administrative duties, to even being sexual companions. They are each programmed with a hard drive in their brain that works like a computer and allows them to have a quick mind and agility, as well as nano machines in their body to repair any damage that can occur with normal usage. There are some people who still view the units as a dead body and have trouble interacting with them in their daily life. But most of the population is too poor to even afford one so this problem is left to the upper classes that can buy the units. For some, poverty is worse than death. For one Porcelyn, death is just the start.

The people with the new blood type are said to be able to be resistant to most high falls, and also are stronger than the average human being. They are now capturing people with the new blood type, blood type AE positive. You just happen to be one of those people with the rare blood and you drive in an attempt to escape the clutches of the Obelus. Unfortunately, your attempt has failed, and you are now trapped in a cell waiting for testing. You are their newest subject, subject number 43.
