Dan is the senior that everyone looks up to, he is charming, witty and sometimes even nice. Phil is the sophomore that is constantly being bullied for being who he his, a boy who likes boys. Roles seem to switch when Dan saves Phil's life, and finds himself falling for the younger boy. Dan is the new target for torment and beatings. But unlike Phil, Dan doesn't handle it very well, and finds himself spiraling downhill, with what seems like no way back to the top.

Phil goes to a new school after bullying becomes too much at his other. But the negativity that has placed itself in his life suddenly starts slowly drifting away when he immediately meets a new friend, Dan Howell, almost immediately. Their friendship quickly escalates, and leaves Phil thinking that maybe his life isn't so cursed after all.

Dan Howell has crippling anxiety, and as a way to cope is to suck on lollipops. And it's always pink or light blue lollipops. Dan's a very shy pastel kid, who's always has a flower crown atop his curly brown hair. Phil Lester has always watched Dan from afar, to scared he would frighten the small boy. He has many tattoos and piercings, even his hair is dyed blue. One day he walks up to the roof of the high school, and sees Dan standing on the ledge about to jump. They both don't fit into their highly religious town, and it drives them crazy.
