Devils hang on the shoulders of Meridian men and women. Voices echo in their heads, words of hunger, words of deceit. Words they dare not repeat. They choose to listen to the angel hanging on their other shoulder, the one convincing them that the devil is wrong, that it doesn't exist.
Aveeva Jones stopped listening to her angel a long time ago. It didn't agree with the whole "killing people for money" part of her job description. It also didn't come up with a better way to put food on the table. Doesn't matter if it's for revenge or if he just happened to look at you the wrong way. If the price is right, the guy dies.
Yet her angel never stops whispering, even as she lingers in the shadows.
