In the 1940s, living in Georgia, is hard. Being an African American is harder, even if your only half. That's Jane Wright's dilemma. Having a white mother and a black father makes you mulatto. Which means she has the best of both worlds.
She has lighter skin than the other negro girls, and darker skin than the white girls but she also has a black woman's curves and white woman's hair. Guys can't get enough of her, until Jane wants more than a sexual relationship, she wants a romantic one.
One night, while at a mixer party- blacks and whites- Jane almost gets raped until Robert Clark comes to her rescue. Robert is kind, funny and totally romantic but the only problem is he's white! Yes, white! And a white boy dating a black girl, even if she's only half, is unheard of.
When Robert starts seeing Jane more and more, he starts getting certain feelings for her.
But will Jane feel the same after going through tons of guys or will she be afraid of what people will think?
