My heart was pounding through my chest as I heard the steps come closer and closer. It's not real, I told myself. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a hand rest on my shoulder. It's not real! I told myself over and over again. But in the back of my head, I knew the doctors were wrong. And there I sat, in the dark room, waiting for my mother to return home.
