Elliott Langston is a privileged teen growing up in predominantly white Arlington, South Carolina. He is going places with his wits, ambition, and remarkable charm. He has been surrounded by success his whole life. His father Charles, is in the running for governor and his mother Elaine, is a very prominent judge. The Langston's are Arlington's elite. They remain in the spotlight for their good deeds. On the outside, it appears as if Elliott is living the American dream with his picture perfect family. However, the Langston's carry many skeletons in their closet. Not many know that the family has deep ties with several white supremacist groups. Elliott hates his family for their bigotry and he hates lying to his black best friend Michael about the real reason he cannot come over to his house. What crushes Elliott the most is the fact that he is falling for his beautiful, lab partner Daryn Smith, who is a black.

Named valedictorian of her senior class with the opportunity to go to any prestigious college in the nation, nothing stands in her way. Raised in a loving, tolerant, Baptist home, Daryn Smith doesn't have an ounce of hate in her heart. Once partnered up with her long time crush Elliott Langston in chemistry, sparks fly between the two. Elliott and Daryn's worlds collide bringing the perfect recipe for a beautiful disaster. One thing leads to another and Daryn becomes pregnant. Word gets out about their secret relationship and the Langston's are furious. Refusing to give up her child, Daryn is determined to raise her and Elliot's baby with or without support. However, one night Daryn disappears without a trace. She is found slain in the woods weeks later. Elliott believes his family might be responsible. It is now up to distraught Elliott to team up with the Smith family for the ultimate betrayal of his own.
