The Cultist's Retreat (The Erik Midgard Case Files Volume 4) by kdnorwich1

How do you solve a murder when you cannot reveal you are an undercover detective? The development of time travel undermined most traditional religions in the Solar System by proving there is no such thing as fate. But it left a void that had to be filled. Today, many people venerate science and evolution, but some worship time itself. In the rings of Saturn, one of the Solar System's greatest sporting events is approaching, providing the perfect cover for the secretive temporal cults to hold their annual inter-faith retreat. Members from every sect will meet to socialise, discuss their ideas and beliefs, and display their latest inventions, which can manipulate time in ways that should not be possible. Time-travelling police detective Erik Midgard is also attending in disguise, to gather intelligence on the cults for the Chronological Operations Agency. It is a risky and complicated assignment, made harder because the laws of time appear to be suddenly - and inexplicably - changing, which could have dire consequences for Erik himself. The last thing he needs is another murder to solve. Undercover in a small hotel, in a jurisdiction he is not meant to be in, with a killer among the guests who may be the most intelligent and cunning adversary he has ever faced, Erik must solve the case, and the mystery of his own origins, before it is too late. One way or another, Erik's time is almost up. The final volume of the Erik Midgard Case Files.

[EDIT] THE STORY IS UNDERGOING SOME REVISIONS SO THAT IT WON'T BE CRINGEY. I wrote this three years ago, so cut me some slack people. [EDIT 2] THE STORY HAS BEEN COMPLETELY REVISED. I edited a lot. Entire chapters are changed, the dilemma, the songs, the interactions, and even the deaths have all been made, in my mind, better. I really wanted to make this a thriller, but I also wanted mature elements in here, and I definitely didn't want you guys to read anything cringey. So, this is the final director's cut of my novel. I sincerely hope you enjoy and appreciate my revisions. Thanks so much. [EDIT 3] Okay I'm still not satisfied I need to keep updating the parts so sorry everyone lmao The inhabitants of Mazeboro, CA have never seen too much trouble, especially not a string of murders that begin to happen all over town. Newton and his friends are shocked and horrified as two of their friends are among the first to be murdered. And in the midst of this disorder, newcomer Thomas Greene brings a breath of fresh air to the students at Mazeboro High. He plays lacrosse, has a kind disposition, and is quite attractive. He catches Newt's attention, and the two form a strong friendship, despite the murders hitting closer and closer to home. Newt and Thomas, along with their friends, must band together and act as one. But, as less and less people remain, fingers are pointed and distrust ensues. Paranoia settles in. Newt must determine who is guilty and who is not, before every single person is dead. A classic Murder Mystery tale, with romance, drama, and plot twists.

I had gotten away with a lot in the past few weeks. Two attractive girls successfully murdered along with a house pet to warn one of my targets she was not safe. I have not forgotten her, long black hair and beautiful blue eyes as well as a model figure. Don't think I have stopped with my plan, she is still on the list and her time will come. She was supposed to be my second victim however it seemed I made things too difficult for myself by sending these notes, with her boyfriend always on guard but he can't protect her forever. The police and security in this town were clearly useless, no evidence, no clues, nothing. I was hungry when I murdered Jess at her party and I was feeding my appetite. You are probably questioning my motives by now, I can't revel that just yet but things will become clearer in time, after all the truth is out there. When I was younger I never expected to become what I had became now, it stemmed from the way I had been treated. See I have no remorse because people never had any for me, once I wore my disguise, I was hidden, well protected and nobody knew who I was excluding the party however I still had my killer instincts about me, you had to become the perfect murderer. I keep my personality different from when I'm the hunter to when I'm just plain old me. When I'm a killer, it's any means necessary but when I'm my plain, normal self then I'm just an ordinary high school student like everybody else. I had my reasons for what I did, some may say I take things too far however I don't see things that way, I see things in perspective to the way they should be. Chelsea Broker was my next target unless somebody else got in my way first...
