As a young teenager, Prince Vegeta inquires about Kakarot and is sent to track him down and retrieve, or kill, him.
But Vegeta underestimated the strength of earth's defenders, forcing him to make two trips of it. Frieza planned on destroying the Saiyans anyways, and because Vegeta was taking so long, Frieza sent the Ginyu Force after him.
After the confrontations on earth Vegeta returns home, knowing full well that Frieza is there waiting for him; to kill him. But Frieza was unaware that Vegeta had fulfilled his destiny by becoming a super saiyan. (Not to mention that Vegeta receives some very unexpected help once there!)
