All of his life Sirius Amory had dreamed of grand adventures among the stars. As an adult he dedicated a his studies to a mysterious energy at the edge of the solar system called the Keywork. Finally he receives funding for an expedition to explore the Keywork, being given a ship named the Meriwell and a state of the art AI named All Mother. Sirius is forced to leave his beloved wife. Meri at home, sending him to a deep feeling of isolation as the only human crew member of the Meriwell.
