Stiles is very oblivious. He is a nice enough guy to help out Malia with her math since she can't grasp the concept. He doesn't realize how this affects Derek. He is head over heals for Stiles, he even hints here and there but Stiles is just too oblivious. Even though he can't take a hint, he does like Derek just as much. Derek lets his jealousy take over one day when he sees Malia flirting with Stiles like crazy.
