Sometimes all you need is a few simple words to get your reader in the mood. Epigraphs are some of the first things a reader reads, and is an important element to your story, as it gets the reader thinking. This can help convey a message, an idea, or even just to set the mood of a piece. They make a statement, and can be as long as a poem, or as short as a few words. Epigraphs are even used to throw off a reader.
