Payne's Landing, Year 2552:

The future is not like what we imagined. Along with some new technology (minus the hovercrafts, space suits and time machines) society has gained something new to get their greedy hands on.

In this world of the future, people have super powers.

Twenty-four year old Kat Andrews is one of the many people who have this privilege. Unfortunately, her life isn't as simple as gadgets and super powers. She is betrothed to someone who she will never love and on top of that, she has a horrid mother-in-law that seems to be taking control of her life, despite her protests.

As Kat's wedding day inches closer, she feels that her life is no longer hers and that her path is being predetermined by everyone else in her life.

All hope is lost when a certain turn of events cause Kat to be taken out of her posh lifestyle and transported to a world that she never knew existed.

Desperate to keep her magic hidden, Katerina goes to great lengths to avoid dragons and mages. When she gets cornered by evil mages, her only chance at escape involves freeing a trapped dragon. * * * Katerina's biggest fear is that unscrupulous mages or dragons would discover her magic and use her as a living magical battery. When she stumbles into a group of evil mages trying to magically enslave a dragon, she releases the dragon to act as a distraction, hoping he would attack the mages while she escaped. But magic has rules, and when you free a dragon mage, it creates magedebt that they must repay, lest their magic fade. Forced to travel together, Katerina struggles to hide her magic as she accompanies Rakota and his friends while they hunt down the Shadow Mages. Rakota is one of many dragons who detest humans due to how many have tried to slay him, steal his treasure, or control him with magic. He has no desire for a rider, but when his childhood sweetheart shows up, she won't consider courtship unless he has one. As if evil mages with ancient spells aren't enough, word comes from the coast that the nagas are planning to invade and wipe out the humans. Goals and secrets clash as Katerina strives to keep her magic hidden, yet that very magic might be the key to stopping the war, and becoming Rakota's rider would give him the family he's always dreamed of. But all magic has a price, and to become a rider, she'd have to forfeit her freedom. Copyright November 2022. All Rights Reserved. Readers may not copy or steal this story. 22 parts Complete

Just seventeen, Keira is not eager to decide the rest of her life, but as usual, she will not have much choice. She has always known she would have to marry - and well, but as the deadline nears, she begins to feel more and more suffocated. It doesn't help that most of her prospects are tedious, arrogant, sometimes entirely revolting, and only interested in using her for some advantage with her father. The only man she can stomach the thought of accepting, also offers the most terrifying future - as royalty. Keira loves Alex, but not romantically, and she doesn't believe she ever will. Not that it keeps him from trying to convince her otherwise....But if it was possible, would love make the rest of it bearable? Especially considering her alternatives? Just as she begins to allow herself to believe in the possibility of a romantic future, someone sets out to destroy it all. When Keira is kidnapped, she realizes just how much she has taken for granted - Alex included. She must find a way to rescue herself and make it home to spoil her abductors' plans. Unfortunately she doesn't know how to get home or even how far it might be. She has no food, no supplies, and no idea how to survive on her own. And asking the wrong person for help could be disastrous. (Sequel to Keira's Fire & Daughter of the Rebellion)
