Becky Weavers is found dead out on Lover's Lane after a heated exchange between her and Stella over a man they are both interested in. Stella and Becky have a long history of messing with other women's men and on more than a few occasions Stella has threatened to have Becky "eliminated." Stella swears she didn't do it and even has an alibi for her whereabouts, but she is still being considered the prime suspect. If what Stella says is true, then obviously, Stella is not the only person in town who wanted Becky dead for one reason or another.

And if other people wanted Becky dead, who were they and why? As the news of her untimely death reached Becky's family, not everyone seemed saddened by the news. Her half-sister Donnica, for instance, seemed very relaxed, and somewhat un-disturbed by the news of her sisters mysterious death...which was very interesting considering how close the two sisters seemed to be in life.

Donnica, a strikingly beautiful woman, was the product of Becky's dad's 2nd marriage to her stepmom, Monica, who he met and fell in love with shortly after Becky's mother, Janice, succumbed to the injuries she sustained in a head-on car collision when Becky was only three. Or at least, that was how the story was told.

Monica DeLouise hailed from New Orleans and was known for dabbling in hoo-doo and the black arts. When Becky was found dead there were no visible marks on her body and no signs of a struggle. A clump of her hair was missing, which appeared to have been torn clean from her head, and a bloody chicken bone was found lying across her chest. Naturally, these signs started the town people's tongues wagging. Folks who attended church regularly on Sundays and called themselves Christians who you would have thought knew better still started whispering that Monica had something to do with Becky's death. Because even though Donnica and Becky grew up together as sisters, blood still ran deeper than water.

She whispered, lips parted, eyes locked with his. She felt dirty for letting him be so close to her and touch her in a way that seemed so foreign and inappropriate- Yet exhilarating... "Maybe scared isn't the right word." His deep baritone voice rumbled, his fingers setting her skin on fire as he reached the opening of her top, the only thing dividing them, "Maybe, confused? Intimidated? But you're not scared of me, right, pet?" "I- I don't know." She answered, her heart pounding against her ribcage, making her shake nervously. "You're scared of this-" his hand lifted back up to circle around her throat and he applied slight pressure, but nowhere near enough to hinder her ability to breathe, "or this." He bent down so she could feel his hot breath skim across her cheek making her face flush. His rough lips, ran across the base of her jaw until he reached her ear, "But you're not scared of me." ~•~•~ 19-year-old Vera Reed is out on her own for the first time, leaving small town Tabor, Iowa for Lincoln, Nebraska to attend college at UNL in her old red Subaru. ONC Ambassador's Pick & Shortlister! Rumors. Infidelity. Lies. Secrets. MURDER. And all before lunch time. Who knew being a socialite in 1951 could be so thrilling? ~~~ On a lovely June afternoon, as the oh-so-chic members of the Gilded Grove Ladies' Book Club gather for their scheduled luncheon, they are shocked to receive the news that their vice president, Camilla Otis, is unable to attend. Gossip ensues. What catastrophe could possibly have befallen her to warrant a last minute cancellation? The answer comes by way of two clever, dashing police officers. It seems Camilla Otis has had quite a busy morning, and that the truth behind her absence is far more scandalous than the Book Club ladies could ever have imagined. As the police dig deeper into the events surrounding Mrs. Otis' shocking crime, buried secrets about the other Book Club members begin to surface. None of the women in question are the fine, upstanding ladies of society that the public believes them to be. Each has tarnish on her so-called "sterling reputation." And no one has more to hide than club president Marcella Montgomery. Written for ONC 2024, this is a tongue-in-cheek "whodunit" (in reverse) that will leave you wondering just what a scorned woman *wouldn't* do for sweet, sweet revenge. ⚠️ Warning: many very nonchalant references to murder and death. Very ignorant (era-realistic), inaccurate comments about nationalities/cultures outside the US.
