Pearl has lived in the Last City for her whole life, but instead of feeling protected by the great wall that encircles it, she feels trapped. Only the Pathfinders are allowed beyond the wall, seeking a way for humanity to return to the outside world. When Pearl turns fifteen, she immediately volunteers for the Four Trials, a series of deadly challenges that determine who is worthy of joining the Pathfinders.
