Chance thinks of himself as small. He's short, quiet and often blends into his surroundings. After his heart is broken over himself being unattractive to his ex, he feels low, low, low (not as low as he ever was, but that's a different part of his life). After he finds the girl who haunts his dreams and sketchbook in the flesh, he falls hard for her.
Meanwhile, horrific things are happening in town. The new band of friends watch on in disgust occassionally, but believe that their lifes will continue unchanged. But when they find themselves as targets, it comes full circle in one terrifying night... will it bring them closer together or tear them apart?

This story is about a 16 year old girl named Melody Swift. Ever since her mother died, her so-called "father" started abusing her. Kids at school are cruel, they bully her brutally just because she's different. She simply waits for everything to get better, after all what's the point in trying when the world will do whatever they can to drag you down. Her only escape from this twisted reality is a creature named Shadow. A terrifying creature that is somehow more humane than the so-called humans around her. Shadow could easily take all her problems away, but Melody refuses to take the easy way out. That is, until she just couldn't take it anymore, she takes Shadow's offer and soon her life got better. Her bullies started disappearing, showing up dead in the woods. Their bodies badly mutilated, almost unrecognizable. Life at school started getting better, she finally had human friends and even a boyfriend. Her "father" was found dead at her house. The torture had finally ended.
