After Scarlett's parents untimely death at the age of thirteen she was taken in by her grandparents. Scarlett- even surrounded by a grandmother and grandfather who tried showering her with love and money- she felt upsettingly alone, keeping only to herself and her beloved cat Boo. Seeing this her grandparents allowed her and Boo to move into their outdated townhouse once she turned sixteen.
