The flames climb higher along with the man's laughter as he slits her throat. Serenity struggles as red seeps into her vision, pooling down her face and into the basin on the floor. The ragged edges of her throat pulse with effort to suck in air-his cut isn't deep enough to end her quickly.

When the police ask her what happened she stays silent, not by choice, but because while the man may not have taken her life, he had taken her voice.

Serenity is the only one who survived the kidnapping. The strangers who lay rotted in the cave and her mother were silenced before her. The questions of guardianship, or more realistically, who gets part of the trust her mother left her, is the first thing people ask.

There is a reason she and her mother were kidnapped, but the first string in pulled when her mothers will names her Uncle Jake as her guardian-an Uncle no one in her family knows about.

Will she ever find the motivation to smile again? Who is the strange man who live with her Uncle? And why does no one know who he is?
