Living with an intoxicated dad and a rude brother can only be described in one word. Hell. Since Amelia's mom died, her dad turned to depressants to numb the pain of his deceased wife. Her brother, instead of drinking, copes with the lost by treating his younger sister like absolute garbage. Coming to school with hidden bruises and cuts covered by band-aids, she hides her life out of school. But there's no hiding life in school. Being picked on and bullied in high school is one thing, but being forced to give up her lunch money and whatever might be in her backpack that day. Calling out for help seems useless, at the end of the day, she's back in hell with her dad and brother...until the house across the street gets bought by a family with twin boys.
