When she encounters a young man drowning himself in books, tucked into the corner at the Woodward County Library, kind-hearted Regan grows curious to know why he's there every day, and more important, she wants to know if he needs help. Not librarian help, but help with something entirely different as he looks rather unkempt with ratty clothes, matted hair, and he hardly looks up from his books. Whether he's homeless or struggles with mental or emotional issues, Regan hopes she can help him to find his way in the world again.

When June, a flesh-and-blood illustration of depression, ultimately decides to quit breathing, she settles on drowning herself in a lake. However, with an extraordinary twist of fate, she is resurrected by a boy named Forrest. Captivating, kind, and honest, he offers her the things she's been deprived of the most. As time comes and goes, June begins to understand that she - after long years of doubt - is worthy of life. She begins to see that sometimes, what seems to be the end may be just the beginning.
