They are trapped in a never-ending play, acting out the same roles over and over in the vague hopes that somehow, someday it will end. But it doesn't. So they deviate from the script, attempt to fulfill the purpose that brought them to the mountain in the first place in a last attempt to break free from the resets. It doesn't work. (But suicide is a pretty memorable thing, and emotions may just be a little bit stronger than memories. Especially to the person who finds their dead body.)
