Bleach-blonde, blue-eyed Violet has had a long, depressing life. The only bright star in her sky is her brother Caleb, her sarcastic and charming other half. On the day of her grandmother's funeral, their mother has to be admitted to the hospital when her schizophrenia becomes more severe. With their mother no longer in the picture, their father abandons them and they go on the run to avoid foster care. As they try to escape their fates, they discover that they possess mystical powers that had been passed down from their mother. Caleb and Violet want nothing to do with any of this, they only want to start over and rebuild their broken family. But they soon realize that those who know of their powers will not rest until the siblings fight for their side; and they must choose, run for the rest of their lives, fight for evil, or fight for good.
