Riley trembled with fear and sadness, the voice of the woman ringing in her ears. She stopped dead, her voice hitched in her throat, and let go of the yellow wall telephone, leaving it to drop, caught by the curly string and leaving it to pound against the wall. She dashed to the coffee table and grabbed her keys, grabbing her violet coat as she scurried out of her apartment, leaving the line on the telephone silent, a dull ringing.

'Hello? Mrs. Friar, are you there?'❞
