The tick of the clock rang in my ear each second as morning grew near. I sucked on the stump of the cigarette I clenched between my trembling fingers. I knew at any second she would awake and find the mess of her boy we left. The boy she clutched onto as he inhaled his first breath. The same boy whose mouth I covered as he coughed out his last one.

FIRST LOVE
He took a whiff of his cigarette before pulling me close to him. My heart was thumping so hard against my chest that I was afraid he'd feel it as I was pressed so tightly against him. He lowered his lips to mine and I instinctively opened my mouth as I captured the smoke.
