Thieving is an honest work if you look at it a certain way. You are working to earn your reward. You have to scout the point of interest, know all of its ins and outs (or daily routes if a person), waste your resources to get to where you can be to take from those who covet things of value. At least, it's honest work to me.

This results in many people living in the Slums struggling to survive and avoiding Officers on the daily. Officers will find any excuse to arrest people and send them to work camps. Todd and Shai are two friends living out of the Slums. They like to pretend to be rich and sneak into the cities to try and steal. Todd is caught one day, and sent to a camp. Shai is determined to do something no Rat has done before: break a Rat out of a work camp. She comes across Mikko, a man kicked out of the city for using outlawed technology. And to make matters worse, as soon as they arrive he's taken hostage. If the creatures who abducted him, and took him to the Imperial Palace, don't kill him first, there's a queue of hostiles, sharpening their knives, right behind them. Luckily Drome escapes with the help of a living skeleton, but that relationship is more than a little strained by Drome's unerring ability to annoy everyone he meets. Getting back to his village won't be easy, seeing as he's not even sure where it is. But he needs to return quickly and warn them of the homicidal imperial troops on their way to wipe out every person in it. That's if someone else doesn't kill him first.Complete

The life of a thief is hard, but glamorous. The watchmen doff their hats at the masters, and after nights of derring-do, they retire to their hidden beds, and beautiful men and women. Or so Roland and Jochim have heard. Unfortunately, they're still stuck doing whatever task is assigned to them by their miserly employer. Whatever pittance they are gifted has to be supplemented by mundane work under the burning sun, shoulder to shoulder with the sweating masses of the city. These, however, are the necessary burdens for the future they desire, burdens that have been shouldered by generations of thieves. Certainly, nothing so capricious that the accidental theft of a simple paintbrush could disturb it... Imagine the surprise when after its discovery, they are pursued by strange men, and stranger monsters, intent on their death, and the brush's retrieval.
