Rene has escaped the pit of darkness that was the Asylum. The years of pain and terror were now nothing more than ashes on the ground. However, the madness cultivated there continues to consume her. Even with her friends' help, she is struggling not to drown.
  
They are all on the run now, from Dr. Laurel and his team that seek to rip the ink from Rene's skin. Friends, new allies, and enemies are set up on the game board, each with a strategy for an unknown end-goal. Michael's past has begun to come to light and with it comes the horrifying truth about what really hides in the shadows. Karo and Kai, the ancient dragons that embody of chaos and order tattooed on her arms, fight to bring balance to the world and drag Rene with them into the battle. 
  
  Fairy tales say dragons are meant to be slain and damsels to be saved. Good thing Rene always hated fairy tales.

For Rene Sparks, it all began with some ink and a knife. Two dragons, one black, the other one white, appeared from nowhere to adorn her arms when she was only eleven. Their sudden appearance and permanent stains of "imperfection" sent her teetering mother over a cliff of madness to the point where she tried to cut the abominations off Rene's arms. They were the constants in her life, the dragon tattoos and the scars that traced them. Unable to fit in with the normals of society, years later, she was placed in a boarding school for youths with mental health issues, affectionately called the Asylum by its residents. The Asylum though was no haven for the insane and Rene struggled to cling to what shred of sanity there might be left from a failing system of experimental treatments and corrupted caretakers as the tattoos on her skin continue to grow in number. Rene's life was no fairy tale and she was certainly no princess, but perhaps even an insane girl can become a hero when they have some dragons up their sleeves. In the lands of Kainor some people are born with runes. These runes, scrawled in black at the base of the right side of the neck, grant the person a certain power. These powers can range from cooking to combat and some can be very powerful and others not so much. One girl is born with a different rune, a golden rune painted on her face. The strange rune gives her strange powers. She is able to steal other people's runes. Now a dangerous assassin, Laika travels the lands of Kainor until she is finally captured by the King of Galabee's soldiers. She is used as a brute to strike fear into the King's not so loyal subjects, while she is kept company by the King's two sons. One of whom helps her realize that maybe she is more than just a killer.
