Shot in the Dark

Footsteps thudded on the pavement behind her, following by heavy breathing. She tried cutting to the left. I swore under my breath. That had been her mistake.
She had left the cover of the trees that ran along the path, and a stinging blare rang put into the solemn night air. It was scary, seeing her face scrunch up in horror. She doubled over, collapsing on the ground. A rustle came from the trees, then silence.
