❝This was the biggest change I had ever had in my life. And I was freaking petrified of it.❞

Fern Ruskin is moving house; the biggest change in most peoples lives.

One problem. Fern is terrified of change.

She has cried for nights when her family bought a new car, selling their old one. She wept for weeks when she took down some posters from her walls, replacing them with new ones.

However, she has told no-one. She identified her problem herself. Metathesiophobia. Now, she is forcing herself to deal with it the same way.

But, in this scary new world, she knows one person in her new village. The boy next door.

They gradually become friends, letting each other in on their deepest darkest secrets. But can Fern bring herself to admit her greatest fear? Not spiders, not wasps. Change. Will she finally learn to trust someone to accept her, flaws and all?

"Em?" Matt said waving a hand in front of my face. "Huh?" "You okay, we were talking and then you stopped," he said looking at me worryingly but I'm still not meeting his eyes, if look up at him he'll know I'm lying. "Yeah I'm fine, I'm sorry" "It's okay, you know you don't really talk about your family that much where are they?" "Ohh look at the lake" I walk towards the bridge that is open giving a full view of the lake to avoid his questions. "Why do you always change the subject when I ask you something personal," he asks once we reach the edge of the lake. "I don't, I just answered your question about the camera" I explain, he was about to say something when he fell onto the lake. "MATT!!!" I scream looking down at the lake he should come up to the surface at any second, but he doesn't so I jump onto the lake to find him. ❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁❁ Emma Wilkinson was forced to move with her aunt and uncle, Rachel and Michael, along with their daughter Sophia after a terrible accident that ended badly. "You were worried about me, Specs?" He smirked. "No, Tyler. I hoped that someone cut up your corpse and fed it to paranas. Obviously I was, you idiot! I'm a doctor. Worrying about people is kind of programmed into my system. It's a curse if you ask me," I surprised myself a lot more than I thought was possible with my answer. And what did he do? Laugh! He fucking laughed! Not full on rolling- on- the- floor laughter but a laugh nonetheless. "This isn't funny, Tyler." "It kind of is. Almost a month ago, I would've sworn that you hated me. Be careful, Specs," he squinted down at me, "or you might actually sound as if you like me." I rolled my eyes. "Don't flatter yourself. I was concerned. Don't confuse that with affection. It's two very, very different things." *** When you think that all is not lost in the world. That not all men are pricks and that not all sushi is bad. When you think that there is a light, no matter how dim, at the end of the tunnel. When you think that life isn't the ruthless bitch you've always thought it was... It turns around and bites you in the ass. When you think that the past will always and forever remain where it should be... It comes at you from every direction. Like a violent tsunami destroying everything...and everyone in it's path. Can you change what happened? I wish. Can you stop what's going to happen? God! I really hope so.
