History's usually written by the men, no? By and about the men. But what about the women, more specifically, what about the mothers of these famous men? In english history, the majority of monarchs inherited the crown directly, and therefore were born of, royal parents. Therefore, somtimes, a monarch's mother, would not in fact be a Queen of England, for all sorts of reasons, though their sons would one day be king. These women would be known as The Mother of the King. Joan of Kent - Dowager Princess of Wales, mother of Richard II of England Blanche of Lancaster - Duchess of Lancaster, mother of Henry IV of England Katherine Swynford - step-mother of Henry IV of England Mary de Bohun - Countess of Northampton and Derby, mother of Henry V of England Cecily Neville - Duchess of York, mother of Edward IV and Richard III of England Margret Beaufort - Countess of Derby, Dowager countess of Richmond, mother of Henry VII These are their stories. Trigger/Content warning: pretty much everything, unfortunately. Sexual assault, domestic violence, rape, discussed at length, with multiple uncomfortable scenes. Sex and sexuality discussed and depicted. Pregnancy and childbirth can be traumatic, along with scenes of depression and loss of a child. Some mild gore. Suicide is discussed. Some unsettling imagery.
