A flight nurse, specifically, where she'd be on board with the men, aiding them when needed, her skills there to help save lives that would be lost if she weren't on board. Through this process, Simone met the men she would be stationed with, being those of the 100th Bomb Group. They all seemed okay in Simone's opinion- except for one, that is. John D. Brady, the bane of her existence- he was insufferable, always cranky, and for some reason hated her before she could even have a real conversation with him. The hatred was mutual, of course- however, the hatred was quick to morph into something different, something more friendly after the two encountered near-death situations. It was something that resembled love- something that was love, and it was so very clearly the one thing that was destined to save them in the end. Everett VonDyke was only a normal eighteen year old boy, with ambitions and high hopes of making something in this world. Unfortunately, his life would soon change one sunny, summer afternoon in June of 1943. He learns that he has been drafted into the U.S Army and must go fight in Japan. During one of his missions, his entire team is killed, in result, he is the only one remaining. He is then taken prisoner of war in a cold dark cell. As he survives the first night. He suffers a severe head injury the following morning, causing him to begin to lose his grip with reality. In order to keep himself sane, he lifts a notebook off of a dead prisoner and begins to write his life story over again so he can remember the young ambitious boy he once was.

Having not yet completed my service to the United States Marine Corps, I thought it would be a bit presumptuous to pen my memoirs. That said, my family and friends have always enjoyed hearing my flight stories. So, I dug out some of my old journals and decided that I’d give an accounting of my flight school adventures. This is by no means representative of everyone’s time in Naval Flight School—this was just my personal experience and point of view on things. So, if you’d like to find out how a Utah girl who’d never given any thought to becoming a pilot before, much less touched the controls of the plane, ended up earning her wings of gold, read on. I was “lead” so I named our flight “Vader” flight, cool eh? So anyway I was flying us out to the area (2F) & as soon as I leveled us off @ 6500ft I noticed my oil pressure was dropping. This is bad because if it drops too low your propeller will feather & your plane becomes a glider—basically your engine is worthless. I stayed calm & let my flight instructor know about my problem. The instructor in the chase plane sent my wing home & followed me down & made my radio calls for me while I executed my emergency landing at Brewton field. My landing was ugly—but I was nervous. I didn’t break anything & I’m alive. ☺

Breaking the law to obtain money is something else she does frequently until it gets normal. Maria uses her smarts and her skills, to get what she wants. Doing so, puts her into an inner conflict of how much pain and hardship she inflicts on others to get there.
