Since the accident Lila Winston has no family left. While at the memorial service for her family a strange lady appears to Lila being an old family friend. She pulls lila aside and describes how to take the strange prescription she shoved in her hand, she goes into a long story that her families death wasn't an accident and Lila should be lucky to be alive. The lady is speaking so fast Lila's head is spinning. Before she disappears she says to Lila "I'll see you soon." Will Lila take the pill?

Helen's parents demand that she marry the man they've chosen for her or be disowned. She chooses to be disowned. But that isn't good enough for them. They make sure that she either doesn't get jobs or they make sure that she gets fired from them. She loses her apartment and all her things do to them. They are sure that she'll give in and marry the man they've chosen rather than live on the streets. But then again, they've never really paid much attention to their daughter unless they wanted something from her. Helen would rather live on the streets and eat out of garbage dumpsters then return to her parents and marry the man that would make her life a living hell. At least on the streets she's free. She might starve or freeze to death but she'll be free. Then one day three men come after her, intent on forcing her and beating her for what little she has. Then, all of a sudden, everything changes. One particular hot and humid night, Irene is called away from the children's ward to help with a new patient that is being brought in. It is a young man with a broken spine. She later learns that he works in the film industry as a stuntman. Over the next few weeks, Irene, while working her shifts, notices that Alexandria is often out during the day. Always the curious one, she follows her young patient one day. She discovers that Alexandria has made a new friend, the young man with the injured spine, whose name, Irene learns, is Roy. A few days later, she is reassigned to work in another ward. Roy's ward. In her new post, she sometimes overhears the stories that he tells Alexandria and is drawn in. Over the course of the next few months, Irene develops a close relationship with her paralysed patient.
