Every fifty years, the Dragons of Flareia choose a new Dragonheir - a human companion with whom to share their power and assist in ruling their respective country. Since the birth of her younger brother, the Avalonian Princess Olivier knew he would be chosen for the title. But when the Sea Dragon chooses Olivier instead, forcing her to become heir to the throne, young Tommel plots revenge, and is willing to align himself with the shadows of Flareia to achieve it.

But beyond Avalona, Flareia is in more danger. In Umbrasse, the Shadow Dragon has chosen a Dragonheir for the first time in two-hundred years. The Earth Dragon's Familiar has been stolen away from Gaiamere. The united throne of Venteer is threatened by a power-hungry Queen. Riots spread through Anemasi at the news of the Spirit Dragon choosing a stable boy as her Dragonheir. Shadows seem to be encroaching on Ignisia, and the Fire Dragon wants answers. 

Amidst her own troubles, Olivier must join forces with the five other Flareian Dragonheirs if she wishes to save not just Avalona, but Flareia as a whole.
