The devil himself can become beauty, so we are told, to corrupt mankind.

They say he stole me,
as if I was only something to be coveted,
some prize to be won,
not an intelligent human in my own right,
as if I was not as feared in their eyes as he was.

they say that he corrupted me,
that his beautiful flower wilted under the pressure of his wrong-doing
but they forget that every day is a chance for rebirth,
that if anyone could be touched by the devil and flourish,
that it would be me.

they say that he tricked me,
that he played me like a game,
that I did not want to stay.
and maybe he did,
but they forget how the days drag on,
how each hour creeps in sooner,
leaving bones aching for a hint of his warmth,
and it is not because he will not let me leave
it is because
I do not want to go on without him.

because if someone can break you,
doesn't that mean you were corrupted already?
