Well, welcome to Karyln, formerly known as the United States before World War three and four. In Karyln, parents try to plan pregnancies to end right around the first of the year because when you're born decides how the rest of your life will be. The first boy and girl born gets the number one, they are projected to receive the best life possible. The next boy and girl get the number two, and I think it's pretty easy to guess how the rest goes. The only thing standing between the elite society and their perfect lives, is The Trial.
